Sustainable development has been defined by the United Nations as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Sustainable development

In September 2015, the General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on the principle of “leaving no one behind”, the new Agenda emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all.

  • Goal : No Poverty
  • Goal : Zero Hunger
  • Goal : Good Health and Well-being
  • Goal : Quality Education
  • Goal : Gender Equality
  • Goal : Clean Water and Sanitation
  • Goal : Affordable and Clean Energy
  • Goal : Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • Goal : Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  • Goal : Reduced Inequality
  • Goal : Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • Goal : Responsible Consumption and Production
  • Goal : Climate Action
  • Goal : Life Below Water
  • Goal : Life on Land
  • Goal : Peace and Justice Strong Institutions
  • Goal : Partnerships to achieve the Goal

For one to understand the true meaning of Sustainable Development, he/she must understand the concept of sustainability, and for one to truly grasp this concept, he/she has to refer back to the community in question and the complexity of the issue raised. The complex system is defined as any system that has various interacting variables. This definition fits the world and society we live in as communities are multi-agent systems that accommodate the actions of networks and groups of agents.

Complexity Linked to sustainability

Sustainability, in its complex sense, has a very flexible interpretation and that is solely due to the variety of agents the community produced. With the presence of this complexity, sustainable development can vary in means and in definition. This is why I like to define Sustainable development as the smart development that is the aggregate of various segments of growth represented by different views and facts.

Get the Sustainable Development Goals back on track

Sustainable development encounters various challenges and obstacles that prevent it from being fulfilled .

Any state of conflict is automatically considered an obstacle to the attainment of sustainable development goals.

Where there is corruption, there is no chance of sustainable growth as corruption is the act of robbing resources that might have been used for a better tomorrow.

Social Exclusion

Social Exclusion creates a huge gap between citizens of different identities and therefore abandons any slight possible opportunity of sustainable growth.

Certainly, the COVID-19 pandemic has had its role in pushing back the work in this field as hospitals can not admit the increasing number of patients which harms the sustainable development’s eradication of inequality and health goals.

Political Turmoil

Political Turmoil is the enemy of sustainable development as they usually cause conflicts.

Financial Crisis

A tired economic system with high inflation and low unemployment rate is surely one who stands in the way of sustainable development.
